WordPress is the Batman of the CMS World

There are so many CMS’s (Content Management Systems) out there, so much so that it’s hard to keep track. How do you know which CMS is right for you? How do you select a CMS with the best functionality for your needs? This is the first of a four-part blog series that will help you not only learn the difference between the top CMS’s, but also, remember what sets each one apart – in a fun and memorable way.

Let’s start with a little overview of Batman & Wordpress (WP):

Batman

Batman’s story is pretty well known, so I am not going to spend a lot of time explaining it here. What you really need to know in order to put this comparison into perspective is that Batman is a very powerful guy without any of his bells and whistles, but when you add those bells and whistles you better watch out!

WordPress

WP is a free, open source CMS based on PHP and mySQL. It is the most popular blogging system on the Web, with more than 60 million websites using it. WP has an amazing community behind it, a plethora of beautiful themes and a very large selection of plugins that allow you to add almost endless functionalities to your site.

What makes WP the Batman of the CMS world, you ask?

  • They are both widely popular WP is used on more than 60 million websites worldwide and Batman has made Warner Brothers $4 billion in ticket and DVD sales alone in the last 23 years.
  • They both have an almost endless amount of toys to make them even better at what they do: One of the greatest draws to using WP is the sheer number of plugins that are out there. With such a large selection of plugins, there is almost nothing that can’t be done with WP.

Everyone knows that Batman has plenty of gadgets, which extend his already endlessly badass abilities. With a tool for pretty much any situation, Batman is always in the top picks for any team and ready to take on anyone.

  • They both have lots of different looks: In addition to a vast array of plugins, WP also offers a plethora of theme choices.

In his 75 years of existence, Batman has had many different looks. Some good, some bad, some ugly. Honestly, I think he has more costumes than any other comic book character that I can think of!

  • They are both powerful and versatile without their add-ons: Although both WP and Batman have many different add-ons and tools to enhance them, they are both pretty amazing without them.

WP’s out-of-the-box features are more than enough for almost any type of site or situation. With just the basic install, you have access to built-in SEO features, built-in comments and RSS feeds. Additionally you have the ability to manage revisions, users, media and links. This list is just a snippet of what WP can do out of the box!

Some may argue that Batman is nothing without his utility belt and all of his gadgets, but when you really look at him you might be surprised at just how powerful he is on his own. Batman is a master at hand-to-hand combat. He has trained with the League of Assassins, is an accomplished detective, a master strategist and one of the top ten smartest people in DC.

  • They could both use a little more security sometimes (Even the Greats have to have some downfall, right?): Although both Batman and WP have a lot going for them, they do have their flaws. In the case of overlapping flaws the glaring one is security. To me, in both cases, this lack of security seems like something that should be non-existent because of who they are and what they do, but somehow things just seem to get passed them...

Even though some might argue that Batman’s biggest flaw is his lack of superhuman abilities, I would generally consider the security of his bat cave to be a little lacking. Now this is not to say that he does not have some of the greatest security measures in his world, he does. It just seems that some of his biggest threats seem to find their way into his HQ.

Likewise, WP is lacking in the security department. It is well known that WP has had some major security issues associated with it during its 11 years in existence. Most recently was a major security vulnerability discovered in August of this year (2014). Although there are many plugins that help to beef up WP’s security, many think (including myself), that a CMS should have a lot – if not all – of the features of these plugins already built into it out of the box. Luckily for our clients, we install these plugins before their sites even go live and keep them up-to-date on any security issues that come up.

In our next superhero-CMS comparison blog, we will look at the similarities between ExpressionEngine and Spawn Stay tuned!
